Genus of only two species of deciduous, rounded trees and shrubs found in scrublands; one grows from southeastern Europe to southwest Asia, the other is native to Socotra. Punica granatum nana is a small, rounded, compact deciduous shrub, up to 1.5 m tall. The small, opposite, shiny leaves are red when young, bright green when mature. During the summer it has copious flowering that continues until early autumn with small funnel-shaped flowers with 5 petals, bright orange-red. The flowers are followed by globose, yellow-brown fruits, up to 3-5 cm wide.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts to all types of soil, even stony and poor as long as it is well drained. It likes very bright exposure, preferably in full sun and tolerates drought well. Moderately rustic plant, it tolerates minimum temperatures down to -5°/-8°C although young plants may need protection in the event of very harsh winters. Being a dwarf species, this variety is particularly suitable for cultivation in pots for terraces and balconies. Also widely used in rock gardens or to create borders.Botanical Information
