Genus of about 30 species of erect trees and shrubs, mostly deciduous, present in woods, rocky places and on hilly slopes in Europe, Asia from west to east and northern Africa. Pyrus pyraster is a columnar, occasionally thorny deciduous tree up to 6-7 m tall. Leaves are ovate to elliptical, shiny, dark green, with thin, forward-facing teeth. In mid-spring, umbrella-shaped racemes of 5-9 white flowers bloom, often with pink shades in buds, followed by small fruits, from pear-shaped to globose, from green to yellow. Different cultivars derive from this species.
