Genus of about 600 species of monoecious, semi-deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, widely distributed in forests and scrubland of the northern hemisphere. Quercus ithaburensis subs. Macrolepis is a spreading, deciduous or semi-deciduous tree, often with a broad crown, dark gray bark, crossed by fissures. The ovate to oblong, gray-green leaves, with angular lobes, surmounted by bristles, are covered with thick white or yellowish white tomentum on both sides. It produces very large acorns and cupules. The cupule has long, everted scales from which it takes the botanical name “macrolepis”. It can reach 15 m in height.
Pedoclimatic requirements
The plant prefers medium textured soils and tolerates heavy soils (clay) and calcareous soils. It can grow in semi-shade (forest light) or in full sun. It requires moist soil but tolerates dry conditions well. This species can tolerate strong winds, even those coming from the sea, rich in salt. Rustic species, it resists cold and frosts up to -10°/-12°c.
Sowing
From autumn to early winter. The seeds are recalcitrant, cannot be stored for long and quickly lose germination. They should be sown immediately after receiving them.
