Genus of about 600 species of monoecious, semi-deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, widely distributed in woodlands and scrub of the Northern Hemisphere. Quercus suber is an evergreen tree 12-15 meters tall and can rarely reach 20 meters in height, with a loose and expanded crown. Trunk generally low from which more or less twisted branches branch out. Both the trunk and the branches have a wonderful and characteristic bark, very thick from which cork is obtained. The leaves are green, leathery and briefly petiolate, they have a blade that varies in shape from ovate to oblong. The margin is generally toothed and spiny.
Pedoclimatic needs
Not very rustic species, it cannot tolerate intense frosts and temperatures below -5°/-7°c. It prefers fresh, loose and acidic soils. Avoids excessively dry environments.Sowing
From autumn to early winter. The seeds are recalcitrant, cannot be stored for long and quickly lose germination. They should be sown immediately after receiving them.Botanical Information
