Genus of about 600 species of monoecious, semi-deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, widely distributed in woodlands and scrublands of the northern hemisphere. Quercus x saulii is an erect deciduous tree up to 15-18 m tall, with a spreading crown, especially in isolated specimens. Lobed, dark green leaves, 8-10 cm long. The bark, initially smooth, cracks into plates in mature specimens. In autumn it produces rather squat dark brown acorns, 3-5 cm long with a slightly enveloping tuberculate dome. Use: ideal for creating groves or as an isolated tree. Also excellent as timber.
Pedoclimatic requirements
It prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soils, adapting also to partially compact and clayey ones. It should be planted in full sun, but it also adapts to partial shade. This hybrid is very rustic and resists even intense and prolonged frosts up to -18°/-20°c.
