Genus of about 3-5 species, perhaps as many as 15 species of evergreen shrubs and trees of the scrublands of Southeast Asia. Rhaphiolepis indica is an evergreen shrub, which can reach 1.5 m in height, with entire leathery leaves, with a strongly serrated margin, bright green on the upper surface and lighter on the lower one. The fragrant flowers, 1.5 cm in diameter, white or light pink in colour, have intense pink shades towards the base of the petals and appear in large numbers in spring. Fruit similar to a drupe, black-purple in color containing 1-2 seeds, much appreciated by birds.
Pedoclimatic needs
The soil must be rich, porous, fresh and well drained; sunny or partial shade position. Resistant well to saltiness and drought. Due to its compact habit, beautiful foliage and exuberant spring flowering, it is ideal for low maintenance borders or to be planted alone or in a group.Botanical Information
