Genus of 8 species of deciduous or evergreen, suffrutic or woody-based herbaceous perennial shrubs found in the dry and rocky habitats of the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean region, north-eastern Africa and south-west Asia. Ruta graveolens is an evergreen, perennial suffrutix with branched stem. Glaucous leaves with strongly incised margins, very aromatic. Yellow flowers at the top of the branches. The fruits are capsules that contain small, blackish-grey seeds.
Pedoclimatic needs
It grows on coastal slopes and scrublands, in Mediterranean habitats, at low altitudes, reaching up to 800 m above sea level. It prefers calcareous and stony soils. It likes exposure in full sun. It adapts to being grown both in pots and in the ground. Plant suitable for Mediterranean gardens without water. Very resistant to heat, drought, wind and salt, it is also partially rustic, tolerating short frosts down to -6°/-8°C.Botanical Information
