Genus Comprising about 25 species of perennial herbaceous and deciduous trees and shrubs, native to the woods and thickets of the temperate and subtropical regions of Eurasia, tropical North and East Africa, Australia and North and South America. They are grown for their foliage, flowers and fruit. Sambucus nigra is an erect and bushy shrub or small deciduous tree. The leaves are impartipinnate, up to 25 cm long, composed of 5 ovate, toothed, green leaflets. At the beginning of summer, numerous white flowers with a hint of moss appear, collected in flattened panicles, up to 20 cm wide, followed by globose, black, shiny fruits. It can reach 6 meters in height.
