Thevetia peruviana is a shrub or small evergreen tree with a bushy habit and thick, compact foliage, up to 4-6 m tall. The long, thin and lanceolate leaves are alternate and light green in colour. The bark is light gray in color and tends to remain smooth even in mature plants. In summer it produces numerous and pleasant yellow, white or orange flowers depending on the variety which can remain on the plant until October in temperate climates. The fruit, inedible, is a green woody drupe. The triangular seed is woody and used in South America to make various jewelry.
Pedoclimatic needs
It prefers soft, deep and very well-drained soil. It should be planted in full sun as it does not produce generous flowering in partial shade. Non-rustic species, it cannot tolerate minimum temperatures below 3°/5°C. This plant resists heat and drought well and can be used for waterless Mediterranean gardens. Young specimens require more care than adult specimens: over the years the development of a good root system allows the plant to be satisfied with the rain, without the need for further watering.Botanical Information
