Deciduous climbing plant with branches that wind clockwise. Leaves composed of 7 - 13 leaflets. The plant can reach 40 meters in height and the trunk, if placed against a wall, can extend over 80 meters in length. Flowering occurs in the months of April and May and features lilac-purple flowers, very fragrant with full and very showy clusters 20-30 cm long, much appreciated by bees. The fruits are velvety pods of bronzed brown color. The original Chinese name is Zi Teng which means "Blue Vine".
Pedoclimatic needs
It requires exposure to the sun but also grows in partial shade. It prefers moist, clayey soils, rich in nutrients; it does not tolerate calcareous soils very well. Rustic plant, it tolerates minimum temperatures reaching -18°/-20°C.
