Genus of over 200 species of deciduous, evergreen trees and shrubs of the woods or rocky areas of the northern temperate regions of Europe, Asia and North Africa. Cotoneaster horizontalis is a deciduous shrub with a prostrate habit, up to 50-100 cm tall. It has small, leathery, oval, dark green leaves. Flowering occurs between May and June and the flowers are pinkish white, located along the branches in the axils of the leaves. The fruit is a small, spherical red berry that in autumn and winter gives the plant a pleasant decorative appearance.
Pedoclimatic requirements
It adapts to all types of soil, as long as there is no water stagnation. It likes exposure to full sun or partial shade. A rustic plant, it resists minimum temperatures reaching -10°/- 15°C. This species is particularly suitable as a ground cover on slopes, where it forms a dense, very decorative covering.
