Genus of 15 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, mainly from the woodlands of southeastern Europe, the Himalayas, eastern Asia and North America. Aesculus pavia is a shrub or small deciduous tree up to 4-5 meters tall characterized by rounded foliage and compound, shiny, dark green leaves. In spring the new leaves take on a reddish color and the plant produces very pleasant clusters of bright red tubular flowers. The fruits are capsules that open into three valves and contain a large shiny brown seed that resembles a chestnut but unlike the latter, the fruits of the horse chestnut are not edible.
