Genus including 16 species of single-trunk palms native to the dry forest of southern California, the United States, Mexico and Guatemala. The brahea armata is a splendid, slow-growing palm with an erect and robust trunk. Under ideal conditions and after many years, it can reach a height of 15 m. The palmate leaves reach a length of 2.5 m and are glaucous-silver in colour, connected to the stem by a thorny petiole. In spring the plant produces beautiful pendulous inflorescences, up to 5 m long, which bear countless small cream-white or yellowish flowers.
Pedoclimatic needs
Very demanding species in terms of brightness, it should be grown in full sun. It adapts to all types of soil, even arid and poor as long as it is free from stagnation. Adult specimens can resist low temperatures of up to -8°/-10°c for short periods. Plant widely used in parks and gardens for the beauty of its foliage, the elegance of its shape and its spectacular flowering.Botanical Information
