Genus of shrubs or small deciduous trees native to the United States and Asia where they grow in woods or on the edges of waterways. Calycantus floridus is a spreading shrub, with a compact habit that can reach 2.5-3 m in height and 3 m in width. The leaves are dark green, oval to oblong, rough on top and sometimes turning yellow in autumn. In summer it bears numerous 4/5 cm flowers, made up of several dark red ligulate petals. The holes have a pleasant scent.
