Genus of 4 species of monoecious evergreen conifers, present in the forests of the Himalayas and Mediterranean regions. The Deodora cedar is a medium-fast growing evergreen conifer up to 40 m tall with pyramidal foliage and spreading branches. The 4-6 cm long needle-like blue-green leaves are lighter in color in the young shoots. The bark is gray in color, fissured in adult individuals. The female strobili are characteristic reddish brown pine cones that flake off into numerous scales when mature. The seeds have a wing and are dispersed by the wind.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts to all types of soil as long as it is deep and well drained. Quite rustic tree, it resists down to -16-18°C. Due to their beauty and grandeur they are widely used in parks and large gardens. They require large spaces to develop at their best and planting in small gardens or too close to buildings is not recommended. The most beautiful specimens are the low-set ones from which the basal branches have never been removed.Botanical Information
