Altezza della pianta: 3-8pm cm

Genus of about 6 species of deciduous trees and shrubs from the Mediterranean regions, Central and Eastern Asia and North America. Cercis siliquastrum is a shrub or small deciduous tree 4-5 m tall, rarely up to 8-10 m. Alternate leaves, simple, round, heart-shaped or kidney-shaped, light green, very ornamental. Pink-purple flowers gathered in short racemes; this species has the particularity of producing flowers on branches and on the trunk (cauliniflora). The flowers appear in March-April before the leaves appear, giving the plant a magnificent color. After flowering, numerous fruits are formed which are flattened and hanging pods, which persist on the plant until the following spring. The trunk is often tortuous and dark in color, with brown cracks, the branches have a reddish bark.

Pedoclimatic requirements

It likes sunny and warm exposures; this species is moderately rustic growing from the plain up to 800 m above sea level, it tolerates minimum temperatures reaching -10°/-12°C. It prefers calcareous, well-drained soils, even stony and dry, but it adapts well to any soil except those that are too clayey. It tolerates air pollution. Much appreciated for the beautiful flowering that occurs before the leaves appear, it is used in parks and gardens or as a street tree. Being a species of limited growth it is also suitable for small gardens.
