Genus of 25 species of deciduous shrubs and trees, in the dry soils of southern Europe, eastern Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Himalayas. Colutea arborescens is a fast-growing deciduous shrub 1-3 m tall. Leaves small, compound, imparpinnate. 1-2 cm yellow flowers gathered in small apical inflorescences. The fruits are characteristic and very decorative legumes. They are swollen like small bags and burst if squeezed in the hand. Black seeds 2-4 mm.
Pedoclimatic needs
It prefers sunny positions, also adapting to partial shade. Very resistant to heat and is also a fairly rustic species, it also tolerates winter frosts down to -6°/-8°c. It adapts to all types of soil as long as there is no water stagnation.Botanical Information
