Altezza della pianta: 30-60cm cm
Genus of 10 species of deciduous forest trees, widespread in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, prized for their foliage and autumn colours. Fagus sylvatica purpurea is a large deciduous tree with an erect trunk and expanded foliage up to 25-30 m tall. The bark is smooth, light gray in color and does not crack even in adult individuals. Elliptical-ovate leaves, with wavy edges, up to 10 cm long. This variety has the characteristic of having burgundy red leaves, especially in spring when they emerge from the buds. It is a monoecious plant that produces male and female flowers on the same plant but in different positions. The male flowers are gathered in round and pendulous catkins, long petiolates, the female flowers are paired in a casing, called 'dome', flowering generally occurs in the month of May. The fruits, called beechnuts similar to small chestnuts, are large edible achenes, trigones, reddish, contained in dehiscent curls with 4 valves.

Pedoclimatic needs

Beech requires coolness and humidity and cannot tolerate excessively hot and dry climates. They tolerate a wide range of soils, even stony or chalky as long as they are well drained, in full sun or partial shade. Due to the beauty of its foliage and the red color of its leaves, it is widely used in parks and gardens, to be planted in groups or as an isolated specimen. This species does not tolerate drought and must be watered regularly during the dry season.
