Genus of 3-5 species of deciduous or semi-deciduous trees and shrubs from India to China, southeast Asia, and northern Australia. Melia azedarach is a deciduous, fast-growing, highly branched, expansive tree with globose foliage and gray bark crossed by fissures. The pinnate or bipinnate leaves, 30-60 cm long, have many ovate to elliptical, finely toothed, sometimes lobed, medium to vivid green leaves. From spring to early summer it produces a profusion of lilac, starry, scented flowers, 2 cm wide, in arched to pendulous panicles. This is followed by yellow fruits, from spherical to largely ovoid, 1 cm long. In Asia the seeds are used as beads. It can reach 15 meters in height.
