“The oak asked the almond tree: tell me about God. And the almond tree blossomed” Nikos Kazantzakis Genus of about 200 species of deciduous or evergreen trees or shrubs, erect, rounded or occasionally spreading, very common in the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere and up to Andes of South America and the mountains of Southeast Asia. Prunus amygdalus var. dulcis is a fast-growing deciduous tree up to 6-8 m tall. It has a knotted and twisted trunk with dark and fissured bark in adult specimens. The lanceolate leaves with serrated margins are light green. At the end of winter, before the leaves appear, it produces numerous white flowers, followed by fruits with greenish and velvety skin which are the famous almonds.

Pedoclimatic needs

It prefers deep, well-drained soil but can also tolerate dry and stony soil as long as it is not too superficial. Partially rustic species, it tolerates frosts that are not too intense and prolonged up to -7°/-9°. Being very early in flowering, it fears late winter frosts which jeopardize its fruiting. Widely used for fruit production, it is also widely used as an ornamental species due to its beautiful shape and magnificent flowering. It is also widely planted for beekeeping as a honey species. Very drought resistant, it is ideal for waterless gardens.
