Quercus coccifera is a shrub or small bushy tree, compact, evergreen, with smooth gray bark, which cracks in mature specimens. Leathery, holly-like leaves, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, with spiny edges, shiny, dark green. It bears solitary, spherical or ovoid acorns in very spiny domes. It can reach 10 m in height.

It prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soils, preferably alkaline; but it can also grow in dry, stony, superficial and acidic soils. It should be planted in full sun. Very resistant to drought, it is ideal for gardens without water. Moderately rustic species, it resists cold up to -10°/-12°C. Ideal for creating free hedges and topiaries or as an isolated bush.
