Genus of about 600 species of monoecious, semi-deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, widely distributed in woodlands and scrub of the Northern Hemisphere. Quercus coccinea is a deciduous tree, initially pyramidal, becoming rounded in mature specimens. It has a trunk with light brown gray bark that cracks in adult plants. The shiny, dark green leaves are elliptical, with deep lobes; the leaves turn red-orange in autumn but only in acid or sub-acid soils. The small acorns are ovoid to nearly spherical. It can reach 20 m in height.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts to loose, deep and well-drained, non-calcareous soils. It prefers full sun exposure and is not afraid of cold temperatures down to -15°/-18°C. This species cannot tolerate drought and excessive heat, preferring cool and humid climates. In a Mediterranean climate, it should be watered regularly during the hot season.Botanical Information
