Genus of about 600 species of monoecious, semi-deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, widely distributed in woodlands and scrub of the Northern Hemisphere. Quercus ithaburensis subs. macrolepis is an expansive, deciduous or semi-deciduous tree, often with large foliage, dark gray bark, crossed by fissures. The ovate to oblong, grey-green, angular-lobed leaves, topped with bristles, are covered with thick white or yellowish-white tomentum on both sides. It produces very large acorns and domes. Botanical name “macrolepis”. It can reach 15 m in height.Pedoclimatic needs
The plant prefers medium-textured soils and tolerates heavy (clay) and calcareous soils well. It can grow in semi shade (woodland light) or full sun. It requires moist soil but also tolerates dry conditions well. This species can tolerate strong winds even those coming from the sea rich in salt. Rustic species, it resists cold and frost down to -10°/-12°C.Botanical Information
