Genus of approximately 150 species of perennial, semi-evergreen or deciduous shrubs and climbers. They are found in a wide variety of habitats in Asia, Europe, North Africa and North America. Rosa chinensis var. mutabilis is a compact and highly branched shrub up to 1.5-2 m tall. The leaves are composed of 3-5 oval or elliptical leaflets with toothed margins; these are initially burgundy and then turn to light green. The peculiarity of this cultivar is that it has yellow, orange and pink flowers on the same plant, depending on the degree of maturation of the petals. Due to this characteristic it is commonly called "rainbow rose" or "iridescent rose". Flowering is very long and begins in May and then ends in autumn with the arrival of the first cold weather.
Pedoclimatic needs
It adapts to any type of soil, even poor, preferring fresh and rich ones. It likes exposure in full sun, but adapts to partial shade. Fairly rustic species, it tolerates minimum temperatures reaching -10°/-15°C. Appreciated for its prolonged flowering, it can be used for hedges, borders or to create splashes of color.
