Genus of 14 species of single-stemmed or stemless palms, mostly found in lowland and swampy areas of tropical forests, from the southern United States to northern South America and the West Indies. The Sabal minor is a small, slow-growing palm that rarely exceeds 1-2 m in height. Adult plants have a stocky trunk, which reaches 50 cm in diameter. The leaves are large, palmate, olive green with glaucous shades. The mature plants in summer bear fragrant cream-colored flowers, collected in long panicles. The fruit is a black drupe when ripe and contains a single seed.
