Genus of approximately 900 species of annuals, biennials, herbaceous perennials and evergreens, and shrubs, sometimes rhizomatous or tuberous, present in temperate and tropical regions throughout the world, with the exception of very humid areas. Salvia officinalis is an evergreen, sub-shrub, erect, hairy perennial with oblong-ovate, entire, tormenting, aromatic leaves. In early and mid-summer, branched stems bear terminal, or axillary, racemes of lilac-blue flowers. Officinal sage leaves are used in cooking to flavor foods and to prepare marinades. They are also used in folk medicine. It can reach 80 cm in height.

Pedoclimatic needs

Grow in light soil that is not too rich and well drained. Grow in full sun or light but not uniform shade. Partially rustic species, it tolerates short frosts down to -6°/-9°C. Very resistant to drought, it is ideal for sunny gardens without water.
