The only representative of its genus Tipuana tipu is a deciduous tree up to 20-25 m tall. It has a stocky and branched trunk, with wide, flat foliage and dense foliage. The light green, impartipinnate leaves are composed of 12-15 leaflets. In summer it produces numerous small yellow-orange flowers gathered in apical inflorescences. The fruit looks like a large samara, but it is actually a legume containing a single seed inside.
Pedoclimatic needs
It prefers sandy soils and tolerates drought and saltiness well. Plant in full sun to have copious flowering, but it also adapts to partial shade. Not very rustic tropical plant, it resists cold which is not excessively intense and prolonged up to -2°/-3°C. Due to its exotic appearance and beautiful flowering, it is widely used in parks, street trees and gardens with mild climates.Botanical Information
