Altezza della pianta: 3-8pm cm
Large deciduous tree with upright habit, up to 30/40 m tall. Sometimes it can also take on a shrubby and bushy appearance. Rounded, expanded and regular crown in isolated individuals. The bark is gray in young specimens, then becomes dark brown in adults. Some young forms have characteristic suberotic thickenings on the branches. The alternate elliptical leaves with serrated edges are dark green in colour. At the beginning of spring, before the leaves emerge, the small purple flowers appear. The fruits are winged samaras that are straw yellow in color when ripe and are dispersed by the wind. In young specimens the superficial roots form numerous root shoots which over time form small thickets.

Pedoclimatic needs

It adapts to all types of soil, both clayey and stony as long as it is not too dry, even if it partially tolerates drought. It likes very bright exposure, preferably in full sun but also adapts to partial shade. Rustic plant, it tolerates cold climates down to -15°C/-18°C. Due to the beauty of its foliage and the pleasant thick shade, this tree is used in urban greenery to create rows. It is also used in parks and gardens to create small groves or for country hedges. Fast-growing species can be coppiced and provides good firewood.
