Plant Description
Genus of about 150 species of deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs of Europe, Africa, and northern Asia and North and Central America. Acer pseudoplatanus is a deciduous tree up to 20-25 m tall. It has a cylindrical trunk and spreading crown. The bark in adult specimens comes off in plates, revealing the pinkish part underneath. The leaves are palmate with 5 slightly acute lobes and a weakly toothed margin, the upper side is dark green while the lower side is greyish green and are supported by reddish petioles. The yellow-green flowers are gathered in pendulous inflorescences. The fruit is a purple disamara.
Pedoclimatic requirements
It adapts to all types of soil, preferring fresh and well-drained ones. It likes exposure to full sun or partial shade. A rustic plant, it resists minimum temperatures reaching -15°/-20°C. Very popular for parks and gardens in rows, as an isolated plant, or to form groves where it can rest in the thick shade. Its leaves in autumn take on magnificent shades from yellow to red.
