Plant Description

Genus of 35 species of deciduous trees and shrubs that grow in all regions of the Northern Hemisphere, generally in poor, moist soil. Alnus glutinosa is a medium-sized deciduous tree that can reach 15-18 meters with beautiful, not very expansive foliage. Rapidly growing species thanks to the nitrogen-fixing bacteria present in symbiosis on its roots. The leaves, which are dark green, ovate, sticky when young, resemble those of the hazelnut in shape. The very decorative, pendulous, golden yellow male catkins appear in late winter-spring and are enchanting when moved by the wind.

Pedoclimatic needs

It grows on the banks of lakes, rivers and along ditches. If the planting soil is not too humid, watering must be constant and regular. They are very afraid of drought and are planted near lakes or streams, in constantly wet soil. They prefer deep, not excessively draining soil; they can often be planted in places where many other essences would suffer, or where water stagnates and the soil is constantly soaked. Rustic species, it resists temperatures reaching -14/-18°c.
