Genus of about 450 species of deciduous or evergreen shrubs of the Northern Hemisphere, North Africa and South America, which prefer the rocky soils of mountain areas. Berberis julianae is an evergreen shrub that reaches a height of 2-3 meters, characterized by dense branches and simple, lanceolate leaves with thorny ends. The dark green leaves in the hot season take on a pleasant red-purple color in winter. In spring the plant produces yellow flowers gathered in inflorescences, which give way to blackish-blue berries in autumn-winter.

Pedoclimatic needs

It adapts to all types of soil, as long as it is well drained and has a good content of organic substances. It prefers exposure in full sun or partial shade. Rustic plant, it tolerates temperatures reaching -15°/-20°c.
