Plant Description

The genus Paulownia includes 10 species of deciduous trees native to the forests of eastern Asia. Paulownia tomentosa is a fast-growing deciduous tree with a majestic appearance, with a spreading crown and spreading branches. Large, heart-shaped, tomentose leaves. In early spring, before the leaves appear, it has a very decorative flowering with numerous, very fragrant, light purple or lilac flowers gathered in large corymbs. The autumn fruits are oval capsules that are dehiscent when ripe, covered with golden down. The small seeds are winged and are dispersed by the wind. It can reach 15-18 m in height.

Pedoclimatic requirements

Grow in fertile, deep and well-drained soil. Too clayey soils (˃30%) do not allow harmonious growth. It should be planted exposed to the sun and fears very windy environments. This species does not tolerate drought and during the dry season requires regular irrigation. Rustic species resists cold and even intense and prolonged frosts up to -18°/-20°C. In case of mild winters, late frosts can cause damage to the new shoots.
