Genus of shrubs or small deciduous trees native to the United States and Asia where they grow in woods or on the edges of waterways. Calycantus praecox is a shrub or small deciduous tree up to 3.5-4 m tall. The foliage is messy and very branched. The leaves are lanceolate and elongated, light green in color and appear in the spring season. A peculiarity of this species is the very early flowering which occurs between January and March. The flowers, which are numerous, small and very fragrant, appear when the tree is still bare and are yellowish-white in colour.

Pedoclimatic needs

It adapts to any type of soil, preferring loose, well-drained soil with a good limestone content. It prefers a sunny or partial shade exposure. Rustic plant resists even persistent frosts down to -14°/-16°c. Plant for cool and humid climates that does not tolerate drought; during the dry season water regularly.
