Plant Description

Genus of about 6 species of deciduous trees and shrubs of the Mediterranean regions, central and eastern Asia and North America. Cercis chinensis is a shrub or small deciduous tree up to 12-14 m tall, with a twisted trunk and expanded foliage. The leaves are cord-shaped and light green in colour. The flowers generally appear before the leaves between April and May, they are gathered in very dense bunches that cover the dark branches, creating contrast with their intense pink color. This is certainly the most decorative element of the genre.

Pedoclimatic needs

It adapts to all types of soil, even calcareous ones, as long as it is well drained. It prefers exposure in full sun or partial shade and resists low temperatures up to -16/-18°c. Much appreciated for the beautiful flowering that occurs before the leaves appear, it is used in parks and gardens along avenues or as isolated individuals. Being a species of limited growth, it is also suitable for small gardens.
