Genus of about 45 species of mainly deciduous shrubs and small trees, coming from northern temperate regions. Cornus sanguinea is a deciduous, vigorous, spreading, very branched shrub with elliptical, light green leaves that become reddish in autumn. In spring, after the leaves appear, it produces creamy white flowers in small umbel-like inflorescences. The small, spherical fruits, black when ripe, are edible when ripe.
