Plant Description

Genus of over 500 species of evergreen trees and shrubs, present in all habitats with the exception of particularly arid ones, mostly in Australia, but also in the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Eucalyptus viminalis is a slender and elegant evergreen tree. In its habitat it can reach up to 30-40 meters but in cultivation it rarely exceeds 15-18 m. The stem is robust, erect with open branches and oval foliage. The leaves are small and sessile when the plant is young, then becoming petiolate in adult specimens. They are dark green in color and are thick, leathery and aromatic. The flowers have very protruding stamens gathered in bunches and are white in colour. The flowering of Eucalyptus viminalis occurs between summer and autumn. It is a variety commonly used in beekeeping for the production of honey. A peculiarity of many Eucalyptus species as well as E. viminalis is the moulting of the bark, which generally occurs at the end of summer. The bark detaches from the trunk and main branches, revealing the new ivory-white bark.

Pedoclimatic needs

It adapts to all types of soil, as long as it is well drained. It prefers exposure in full sun. Not very rustic plant, it tolerates minimum temperatures reaching 0°/-3°C.
