Plant Description

Genus of about 65 species of deciduous trees, rarely evergreen, usually found in the woods of Europe, Asia and North America. Fraxinus ornus is a medium-sized deciduous tree about 8-10 meters high, characterized by a more or less straight trunk, greyish bark and oval foliage. The leaves are opposite, impartipinnate, opaque green in color, with a serrated margin. The flowers, white in color and pleasantly scented, are very numerous and gathered in inflorescences. The fruit is an oblong-shaped samara. In the southern Italian regions it is used to produce manna.

Pedoclimatic needs

It adapts to all types of soil, as long as it is well drained, even dry superficial and stony soil. A very drought-resistant species, it manages to colonize arid and impervious slopes. It prefers an exposure in full sun or partial shade. Rustic species, it tolerates temperatures reaching -15°/-20°C.
