Genus of about 14 species of deciduous trees, usually thorny, of forested areas of North America, South Africa and tropical Asia. Gleditsia triacanthos is a spreading deciduous tree, with thorny trunk and branches. The leaves, shiny, up to 25 cm long, are dark green and turn golden yellow in autumn. They can be pinnate with 14-24 leaflets, oblong-lanceolate. During autumn it produces large pendulous pods up to 50 cm long, black when ripe. It can reach 20-25 m in height.
Pedoclimatic needs
Grow in any fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Rustic species, it resists cold and even intense and prolonged frosts down to -20°/-25°C.
