Plant Description

Genus of 30-45 species of deciduous and evergreen trees, native to the humid rainforests of tropical America. Jacaranda mimosifolia is a deciduous tree, up to 12-15 m tall but erect, with dense and rounded foliage. The bark is dark and smooth; the leaves are bright green, bipinnate, similar to those of J. cuspidifolia. In late spring it produces many apical clusters made up of trumpet-shaped flowers, about 5-6 cm long, blue-purple in colour, which give the plant a very decorative appearance. The fruits are woody capsules similar to Spanish castanets.

Pedoclimatic needs

This tree loves sunny and well-ventilated places. Prefers loose, deep, well-drained and fertile soil; they fear very humid and too compact soils. In autumn and early spring, bury mature organic fertilizer at the foot of the plant. A non-rustic species, it fears cold and frost and can only be raised outdoors in citrus climates where temperatures do not fall below 0°C.
