Plant Description

Descriptions Genus of some species of evergreen, rounded shrub, present in the scrub, in the woods and on the edges of woods in the Mediterranean region. The Myrtus communis var. tarentina is an erect bushy shrub that arches with age, bearing opposite, strictly elliptical, shiny, very aromatic, dark green leaves. M. tarentina differs from Myrtus communis due to its more upright shape and smaller leaves. From mid to late summer it produces solitary cream-colored flowers tinged with pink, with 5 petals, with showy central tufts of white stamens; the flowers are followed by oblong-ellipsoid, purple-black berries. It can reach 5-7 meters in height.

Pedoclimatic needs

Drained soil without water stagnation, preferably with low limestone content. Grow in full sun or partial shade. It adapts to being grown both in pots and in the ground or in flowerbeds in regions with a mild climate. This variety is more resistant to the cold than Myrtus communis, withstanding cultivation temperatures between -7°/-9°C.
