Genus that includes about 120 species of evergreen, monoecious, arboreal or shrubby conifers, long widespread in the forests of the Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to Central America, in Europe, North Africa and South-East Asia. Pinus mugo var mughus is a dwarf conifer with a rounded and compact crown that does not exceed 1.5 m in height and 2 m in width. The 3-4 cm long dark green needles are gathered in bunches at the ends of the branches. Flowering occurs in May and the flowers are distinguished into male, yellow-orange, at the base of each shoot and female, reddish, at the apex of each branch.

Pedoclimatic requirements
It adapts to all types of soil, even dry stony and calcareous ones, as long as they are well drained. It can be grown in full sun or partial shade. A very rustic plant, it resists minimum temperatures reaching -28°/-30°c. It can be grown in cold locations exposed to the sun and wind. Being a dwarf conifer, it is particularly suitable for flowerbeds in small gardens, bonsai, rock gardens, terraces and balconies.
