Plant Description

Genus that includes about 120 species of evergreen, monoecious tree or shrub conifers, long widespread in the forests of the northern hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to Central America, in Europe, northern Africa and south-eastern Asia. Pinus pinaster is a characteristic pine of the Mediterranean scrub that grows on the Mediterranean coasts. It appears as an erect tree, sometimes prostrate, with conical, then domed foliage. Mature specimens have very cracked, orange-brown to purple bark. The leaves are robust paired, rigid, spaced, grey-green needles up to 30 cm long. The fruits are large green pine cones with pointed scales, which turn brown as they ripen. It can reach 20 m in height.

Pedoclimatic needs

This pine is very undemanding and adapts to any type of soil as long as it is free from stagnation. It must be planted in the sun, it resists wind and salt. Very resistant to drought, it is ideal for all Mediterranean gardens without water. Thermophilic species that loves warm climates but moderately resists cold down to -12°-/14°c for not too long periods.
