Plant Description

Genus of about 600 species of monoecious, semi-deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs, widely distributed in woodlands and scrub of the Northern Hemisphere. Quercus robur subsp. Pedunculiflora is a subspecies of the English oak distributed in Greece, the Balkans, Turkey and Asia Minor. Similar to the typical species, it is a very long-lived deciduous tree that can reach up to 30 m in height. The foliage is globose and expanded in isolated specimens. The leaves are entire and lobed. The trunk, robust and branched at a short height, has a grey-brown bark that is smooth and shiny when young, then darker and fissured. The acorns of this subspecies are particularly elongated, up to 4.5 cm long, with thick domes that cover about a quarter of it.

Pedoclimatic needs

It is a mesophilous, heliophilous species and resistant to winter cold (up to -18°-22°C), it prefers the fertile, fresh and deep soils of the plains, even with shallow water tables but it also adapts to heavy and clayey ones , without too prolonged stagnation. It does not tolerate drought and during the dry season the young plants must be watered regularly.
