Plant Description

Genus of 14 species of single-stemmed or stemless palms, mostly found in lowlands and swampy areas of tropical forests, from the southern United States to northern South America and the West Indies. Sabal mexicana is a slow-growing palm that can reach 12-14 m in height, but rarely exceeds 8-10 m in cultivation. It has a rough trunk covered with leaf bases that form a characteristic pattern. It has a compact, globose crown, with palmate, light green leaves. Mature plants in summer bear cream-colored flowers, gathered in panicles that are slightly longer than the leaves.
